Whatever your level, you should experiment with the code, play with it. Depending on your level of experiece, you may be able to understand exactly how it works or maybe just some of it. The basic movement of the snake can be implemented in a simple program as shown here: import turtleįor info on using the super-handy stamp() function of Python Turtle Graphics, check out Python Classic Snake Game Code Listing Ta da the snake has moved forward one position! These are the steps for the second version: Create a copy of the head, add it to the front of the snake and then chop off the last segment.Chop off the last segment, and add it to the front of the snake each time the snake "moves".Here are two ways to conceptualize what is basically the same effect: The main challenge is how to get the snake to move. There are several ways to approach programming the Classic Snake Game in Python (or other languages for that matter). But you can forget about a white background and a black snake line that you would see in the "Snake" game on a regular Nokia phone (or even in the mini-game "The Sims"), because we’ve a riot of colour, shapes, graphics and noise coming at you from the screen. "At the very core of the game, Snakes is a straight line moving around a grid. It brought bonus pickups, local multiplayer over multiple handsets, the ability to copy the full game to another handset over bluetooth, global high scores, a 3D board that allowed you to snake around the top surface and then the underside, or on a sphere…Īnd if you hunt around on the internet, you can still find my original review: It brought color to the game, it brought not just square grids but hexagonal grids. The 2005 release was a huge step up from the monochrome top down view seen in the early Nokia Snake games. Not Snake.īecause if you go back, there was a ‘classic Nokia’ game called Snakes. And while the new Nokia handsets tap into that, the version of Snake that ships with the machine looks nothing like the Snake everyone remembers loving, nor does it play remotely like Snake from 1997 or Snake from 2000. Because of the fascination of Snake on the Nokia 3310, it has been seen as the default version, the one that nostalgia brings to mind. What’s going on? What does it mean? What should I do about it? Novel-random, unpredictable-events alert the brain by activating the amygdala and the reward system. (The further into the future the brain tries to project its predictions, the less accurate they’re likely to be because the world we live in is not linear but a complex adaptive system containing multiple other complex adaptive systems. The brain can’t pay attention to everything, so it focuses on what seems important in the moment in order to predict what’s going to happen next and prepare a response. We try to make sense of the events we experience so we will know what to do the next time we encounter a similar situation. Hindsight bias is an unintended by-product of an otherwise adaptive process for selecting and processing information as we try to make sense of the events that we experience. Nassim Nicholas Taleb, The Black Swan We Can’t Stop Making Sense Psychologists call this overestimation of what one knew at the time of the event due to subsequent information the hindsight bias, the “I knew it all along” effect. If they were made for us to understand things, then we would have a machine in it that would run the past history as in a VCR, with a correct chronology, and it would slow us down so much that we would have trouble operating. Our minds are not quite designed to understand how the world works, but, rather, to get out of trouble rapidly and have progeny. The hindsight bias makes the past seem more predictable than it actually was-and also more consistent with the present. It’s much harder to sort things out when you don’t know what to sort for. But we only know what was relevant because we know the outcome. In hindsight, we can separate the relevant signals from the irrelevant signals to reveal a clear and inevitable path to an obvious conclusion. So we convince ourselves that random events were actually foreseeable.Īfter an event occurs it’s easy to believe that we-or others-either knew it would happen or should have known it would happen. Our belief in a linear, cause-and-effect world leads us to think that everything can be explained and, therefore, everything is predictable-or at least it should have been-after the fact. If the brain actually liked novelty, then it (and we) would revel in the surprise of all the random and unpredictable events that occur in our lives instead of employing the hindsight bias to try to explain them. What if the brain really liked novelty instead of just having a strong response to it? Keep in mind that the dual-tone combination will be an option. The two-tone is well-executed, and it's easy to see why Renault say the Captur was designed to sport a dual-tone paint scheme even since it was conceptualised. That said, the 17-inch wheels look classy, and the 215/60R17 tyres look just right sitting under the flared wheel arches. The design here has some understated French flair, which is going to be an acquired taste for most. The profile and the rear are a notch understated compared to the face. It also sits quite high up, with a healthy 210mm of ground clearance. While the curvy design does give you the illusion that the Captur is compact, it does have great road presence. It's got a bit of novelty on its side for now, and the bright orange colour our test car wore only aided the eye-ball grabbing. Lest, we forget, the Captur is also one of the longest and widest cars in the segment with the largest wheelbase too. Will you give it a second glance? Oh yes. Yes, it isn't as tall as a conventional boxy SUV, but there’s no doubt that it looks like a premium offering. We once parked it next to a Duster at a restaurant and were pleasantly surprised at how mature the Captur looked. But, spend some time with it and the edgy design grows on you. Thankfully Renault have answered our requests and it makes a more family friend environment through most simple of touches. The Captur's crossover design may not appeal to all at first glance. Renaults of old were simply never available with these sorts of pleasantries and motoring journalists often asked ‘why not?’. My favourite touch, our touches, from the interior was the piano black on the centre console, surrounding the R link screen and also on the steering wheel. Not the end of the world, as this car isn’t built to take Eau Rouge flat-out, but again it is worth noting. I did notice that I was leaning across the seat quite noticeably when cornering though due to the lack of significant side-bolstering. The seats are nice and comfortable and can be easily unzipped and thrown into the washing machine just in case the kids decide to be, well, kids. Connect your iPhone up via USB and you can operate most things you’d ever need on your phone via the responsive touch screen. The Captur features the R-Link technology which does an excellent job of controlling all your in car entertainment, satellite navigation and much more. Hatchback owners who are unfortunate enough to spend a lot of time on our clogged motorways should certainly consider a Captur for their next car, gridlock will become far more comfortable. The Captur sits planted and sturdy while chewing up the motorway miles, in total control when switching lanes and doesn’t really break a sweat under normal driving circumstances. The car is a marked improvement over the Clio on the motorways. The Captur will glide over potholes, manholes and speed bumps with relative comfort. Happily we can report that that lifted suspension does a brilliant job even on the most compromised British B roads. There are a few compromises though firstly, there is notably more body roll thanks to the raised ride height and equally raised centre of gravity, it’s not horrendous and this isn’t the kind of car you really want to be throwing into corners, but it is worth noting. The car shares its underpinnings and platform with the excellent Clio, which is good pedigree for a B segment SUV because the Clio is a genuinely great car to drive. If you do most of your driving in suburban territories though, the 1.5dCi 90 will be suitable and if you do sub 8k miles then the 0.9tCe is also a very good powerplant. We found the higher powered 110 version was necessary for the Captur because although its dimensions are cute it still weighs a bit and the extra power helps the car comfortably get up to speed on the motorway, which is always handy when merging. It’s a tried and tested unit the return up to 76mpg and is available with £0 road tax thanks to the thoughtfully low emissions. See our Dacia Duster review, Dacia Logan review, Mercedes A Class review, Nissan Qashqai review and countless others. The 1.5 dCi is a familiar engine for us, we’ve reviewed it a number of times. Petrol options include a 0.9tCe and 1.2tCe units. Our pick of the bunch is the 1.5dCi 110bhp diesel, although there is a 90bhp available too. The Captur is available with a nice range of engines, all of which are turbocharged, giving enough whoosh to keep you going. No need to unnecessarily copy unchanged files. Backup & Sync can be a great offsite backup solution for your computers if used correctly. If you have a large amount of data, this can cause issues such as hard drive filling up or slow internet speeds due to syncing. One key difference is that you can upload photos and videos through Backup and Sync, but not with Drive File Stream. Here is a video I created showing how to install the new Backup & sync app.īackup & Sync will syncronise selected data between Google Drive and your computer. I’ve suffered in silence long enough. Here in the U.S., Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Over the last few years in particular, I’ve heard more and more people - including some of my own colleagues - deride the fedora, but I’d like to come to its defense and declare that the fedora is a cool hat even if it isn’t presently in fashion. Why? I don’t know, but as a lover of old movies, I probably thought it was cool to look like an old-timey private eye or newspaper reporter. I even - and I hesitate to admit this - would occasionally wear a fedora myself about a decade ago, and I still own a few of them. Some even blame JFK for its downfall, because he failed to wear a hat for his inauguration in 1960.įor the record, I must admit that I think the fedora is a rather cool hat, and I’ve only included it here because society as a whole has decided that only douchebags wear them. It stuck around for a couple of decades, but faded in popularity in the 1950s and 1960s. It began to be popular men’s fashion in 1924 when Britain’s Prince Edward started wearing one, and before long, it was the preferred headwear of men in America and Britain, particularly in urban areas. Stupid Hat History: Originally marketed to women in the 1880s, the fedora was popularized by actress Sarah Bernhardt and gained its name from a 1882 play she starred in named Fédora. This may have hurt the sales of Brock’s “Brockabrella,” but it did put the universe back in balance as the umbrella hat has remained uncool since.Īs Worn By: Humphrey Bogart, and every other cool dude in the 1930s Before long, the umbrella hat became a laughing stock thanks to another ballplayer - Chicago Cubs outfielder Jay Johnstone - who notoriously wore one with his mouth agape on a 1984 Topps baseball card. Louis Cardinals outfielder Lou Brock began selling them. The hat never caught on, except for a brief period in the late 1970s when St. Among Patten’s tales was that he invented the umbrella hat while prospecting in Mexico, finding it to be the perfect hat to protect from rain as well as sunshine. Patten, who became a fixture in the city for his wild stories. Though it’s precise origins are unclear, the hat was popularized in the 1790s by a Seattle eccentric named Robert W. Stupid Hat History: Much like the dunce cap, it’s hard to imagine that the umbrella hat was ever intended to be a serious bit of headgear, but it was. Umbrella HatĪs Worn By: Baseball Hall of Famer Lou Brock, who actually managed to make it look cool for a couple of years The only real holdouts nowadays are cornball magicians and steampunk cosplayers, which pretty much guarantees that it’ll never be fashionable again. While originally a status symbol, it eventually began to be worn by everyone, and fell out of fashion in the early 1900s. What is known is that it was popularized by the famous English dandy, Beau Brummell, who was a British fashion icon in the early 1800s. That story - and Hetherington for that matter - seems to be entirely made up, and the exact origins of the top hat are unclear (though it may have descended from the capotain hats that the Pilgrims wore). It claims that its inventor, hatmaker John Hetherington, caused an uproar on the streets of England when he first wore it, as people found it intimidating - it even says he was hauled into court over it. There is a legend that goes with the origin of the top hat, though. That’s a pretty obnoxious function for a hat to have, and I hate them. The only reason they’re like that was because they were designed to denote status and to look important upon their wearer. Stupid Hat History: Seriously, there’s no good reason for a hat to be this tall. As Worn By: Abe Lincoln, the Monopoly Man and that problematic gay capitalist Mr. “Site-Specific but Never Mind That: Matisse’s Lasker and Brody Commissions,” conference in conjunction with the exhibition Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, November 2014. “Did Henri Matisse Really Understand Chinese Art?” invited conference paper for the 12th annual Beijing Forum, inaugural session on Art History, “The Diversity of Art History,” Beijing, China, November 2015. “Design in Art History Teaching and Research,” in panel on modern design in conjunction with invited lecture by Kristina Wilson, Program in American Culture Studies, Washington University, February 2016. “Triumph and Disaster of Collaboration: Henri Matisse and the Gobelins, 1946-49,” in conference “L’invention partagée/Shared Invention,” Aubusson, France, April 2016. “Ranking Decoration,” in session “The Rank of Art,” 34th International Congress of the History of Art, Beijing, China, September 2016. “Ultimate Method or Ultimate Materials?” in “Looking at Matisse Now: A Symposium,” The Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia, October 2016. NordVPN’s inbuilt ad blockers, CyberSec and Threat Protection, do not effectively block all ads because they use only DNS filtering to block domains and don’t remove ad content from the page. Using a VPN ad blocker will not block Twitch ads that are integrated within the stream, but it will block on-page ads such as the Homepage carousel and ad banners. NordVPN and Private Internet Access’ ad blockers are available on Windows, macOS, android, and iPhone devices. NordVPN and Private Internet Access are both equipped with proprietary ad blockers that are ideal for blocking Twitch ads while maintaining your online security. These VPN ad blockers can’t block pre-roll or mid-roll ads, but they are effective at blocking on-page ads such as frontpage banners. Some VPNs are also equipped with a built-in ad blocker as one of their features. How to Block On-Page Twitch Ads with a VPN This is the most effective way of blocking all ads on Twitch, but it usually requires a small subscription fee. VPNs also come with the added benefit of increased privacy and security when browsing online. Your stream may buffer when connected to a server far away from your location, however we only experienced this when first loading the livestream. You might find your recommendations tab changes depending on the country you’ve connected to, but you’ll still be able to watch live streams from anywhere in the world. Using a VPN, you can change your IP location to one of these countries and block all types of Twitch ads permanently. Twitch’s advertising policy differs from country-to-country, with some locations like Poland omitting all types of ads. Using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) is the best way to block all advertisements on Twitch.Ī VPN lets you change your online location by connecting to a server in a different country, providing you with an alternative IP address.
